The 1913 Liberty Head Nickel
From the ANA's Edward C. Rochette Money Museum, see one of the five known 1913 Liberty Head nickels. Struck under mysterious circumstances at the Philadelphia Mint, they were made famous nationwide during the 1930's by legendary Fort Worth coin dealer, B. Max Mehl, who widely advertised to buy them for $50 each. This 1913 Liberty nickel on display in Texas for the first time is insured today for $2.5 million and was the subject of a worldwide search in 2003. It was unsuspectingly kept in a Virginia closet for 41 years because the owners were mistakenly told it was a fake!
